Really!!! Just because last year I’d already planted 1/4 of the potager with early crops on March 7, and another 1/4 on March 13….and this year, I’ve planted zilch, zero, nada; even though my team didn’t even make it into the Big Dance; even though the forecast is for even crappier weather in the coming week, I don’t care if it’s snowing! REALLY! Why?
Because these wonderful treasures arrived in the mail today, and if it were beautiful and warm outdoors, I might feel a bit guilty about staying indoors with an entire pot of tea devouring every photo and sentence. But now, I can read and absorb each and every page; mull over every idea and weigh its merit.
Yes, I’ve been gardening for over forty years, and I’ve had the opportunity to design and plant numerous gardens. My potager was months in the sketching/erasing stage before it was built, and I am delighted with it. But, I know I can learn more, I can make it even better, even more productive, even more beautiful. I’m old school. I love books!
I’m still amazed that I can order books on the Internet…..these are all used, and most of them were 1 CENT or 2 CENTS!!! A couple were 99 Cents, one was 1.99, one was a bit more. I think my birthday check from my mother was well spent! Happy, happy hours ahead! Let it snow!

Yep, agree…I have several hundred books about gardening and plants!! And, have written extensively over the years about Organic Gardening…All books are very well used and I’ve been gardening over 50 years…so obviously much older than you and love it still.

I especially love books about the making of a garden…the thought processes, the reasoning behind the design and plant selection, the trials and successes. Not so much the how-to books anymore. What are some of your favorites?

HI, I wish I could take winter in stride as well as you are doing it! My garden is a mess and really am dying to get out there and get it cleaned up, hang the planter boxes and replace some plants that didn’t make it through the frost this year. Winter go away already! Oh, I’m eager to get started too, but since I can’t, it’s lovely that the books arrived to occupy my brain and my time until I can play outdoors. My clipboard (job list) just keeps growing as I look out the window and think of things that need doing. I know once the weather settles, there will come a day that I will wish for rain as an excuse to just stay indoors and read, and remember these stuck-indoors-days with great longing!

It looks like you will be busy reading those books for a while! I have a bunch of gardening books, but I don’t see any in there I have in my collection. I do see one by Joy Larkcom though, and I have her Oriental Vegetables book which is my go-to reference on that subject. We only got a dusting of snow down here in So. Indiana but it has turned bitter cold. It is a great day to stay inside and read!

I am really enjoying the reading, lots of differing viewpoints and great photos. Snowing here at present although ground is clear for the moment. Wanted to do more transplanting, but my potting soil is frozen solid. Probably take 3 days to thaw out in the basement!

I also have many gardening books. Right now, I am trying to put together a plan for an herbal garden for my garden window. I am excited about growing herbs that I can just pluck from the window for my cooking.

That’s a great project. Just be sure to choose herbs that like the same amount of water, and will like the amount of sun at your window. I love cooking with fresh herbs, or my own dried ones. Best of luck.

No I’m definitely not in CA, but I’m sure there are some great bloggers who are. Theresa Loe is a friend of mine, and she is in CA…an expert on gardening and food preservation, author, co-producer on “Growing a Greener World” tv show. She is probably too busy to actually tell you what to do on an individual basis, but I’m sure you can get great ideas from her blog “Living Homegrown”
