Thirty years ago, or so, I enjoyed painting landscapes but I haven’t painted since. However, now that I’m retired, once the gardening season is finished, I tend to flounder and stew until the seed catalogs begin to arrive. To avoid that downward spiral I’ve decided to take up painting again, so I’ve purchased all the needed supplies. While it rains, I sit and stare at the blank canvas, and the brushes and tubes of color intimidated, and unsure how to start. And I wonder……is this as silly as thinking that purchasing a helmet and shoulder pads make me a football player?

Continue to stare at the blank canvas…..one day (or night) an inspiration to open up a color will overtake you. Only then will it be time. ….and yes, your time will come! Have confidence!

It’s only as silly as if you don’t paint the canvas. Start painting. Treat it as trial and error in the same way you do your garden…and don’t look back.

You should absolutely paint again! You have so much inspiration to draw from in your garden. Once you get past that initial beginning stage of putting paint on canvas, you won’t be able to stop!

Yes, Carolee, definitely start. What have you got to lose but some time? Depending upon what materials you’re using, you can always paint over it. I have a whole bunch of posts of how-to and step-by-step on my blog under the tab Artwork. Or check out some YouTube videos for inspiration. Put on some music, listen to a recorded book, and just let go!

Just get yourself stuck in- there are no mistakes in art! I do love Craftsy for guided painting projects when I need inspiration and guidance, and I know there are a ton of free tutorials on YouTube that might help get things started for you! Good luck!

What kind words! The urge to do some things before I get too shaky to hold a brush, or to see things clearly is strong. The mist hangs low over the fields this morning. I wish I could capture it!

The terror of the white canvas is the same as the terror of the blank page. Somehow, I always find the words. Hope you find the images.

Painting sounds a great way to distract yourself from thought of the gardening you can’t be doing.

Paint a background colour across the whole canvas. This makes it easier to start somehow.

It sounds like so much fun to start painting again! If you like to paint, just do it, without thinking about the finished result. The important thing is to do something you enjoy, isn’t it? 🙂

I always tell everyone I meet that it’s the process and not the product. And believe me, I learned it the hard way as a “recovering” artist. Just have fun!

Try not to think too much about it and try not to judge yourself! Just paint from your heart–paint your favorites plants from your garden and that way you are still with them in the winter!
