Six on Saturday-April 7

It’s April?    Are we sure?  These crocus seem doubtful.  Yes, it snowed again last night.  And the miniature daffodils   in the fairy garden seem to be perplexed as well.  Maybe it’s partially because the fairy houses that make up the village have not been placed for the season.  These boxwood balls in the Front Garden appear to have given up the hope of Spring, and may have passed on to that great garden in the sky.  So, we’ve started Six on Saturday with three dismal things.  On a cheerier note, there are new signs of life.  The lovage in the potager has emerged and is looking perky.    I love this easy-to-grow perennial herb that tastes like celery.  It’s great in soups, and the hollow stems make great straws for Bloody Marys.  I would have taken a photo to show the growth of the rhubarb to compare to last week’s, but it is still exactly the same size.  However, three more plants have emerged, so that’s good.  The greenhouse is filling nicely and now holds 30 flats of seedlings, 15 pots of dahlias, and the 3 pots of French Fingerling potatoes.  Hopefully some of these can go out to “harden off” soon so that more flats can be moved from the basement.  And lastly, there are new blooms to give us hope.  These precious little Puschkinia just

  appeared in the Potager’s exterior front border.  I didn’t plant them there, although some were planted in the Front Island so I suspect the squirrels have done some landscaping on their own.  They are a lovely little bulb, helping to fill the gap after the crocus begin to fade and the tulips begin, because their soft blue blooms play well with all the various yellows of the daffodils.  You may know them as Striped Squill.  So that’s my “Six” for this Saturday.  Hopefully the oft repeated phrase “Next week surely there will be photos of planting!” will at last come true.
